EP.6: allnex — GC’s Distinct Strength Powering the Future of Specialty Chemicals

Back in 2021, GC acquired allnex, a German-based global leader in sustainable coating resins used across a wide range of applications. This decision not only marked GC’s global expansion but also strengthened its Specialty Chemicals business, positioning the company for long-term growth and a solid presence in international markets.
Today, allnex is a wholly owned subsidiary of GC, with GC holding 100% ownership. GC leverages allnex’s over 70 years of experience to develop further technologies and innovations that meet evolving market needs. With 24 R&D centers and 33 manufacturing sites worldwide, allnex has a strong presence across key markets in Europe, the Americas, and Asia-Pacific. The company is also actively expanding its footprint in Asia by establishing regional hubs in China, India, and Rayong, Thailand, enhancing market access and strengthening customer proximity in high-growth areas.
allnex’s Coating Resis stand out for their advanced, environmentally friendly technologies and innovations, offering sustainable solutions that meet the needs of multiple key industries — including automotive, packaging, construction materials, and electronics. The products are categorized into five main groups, starting with:
1. Liquid Resins & Additives
- Distinguished by SCA (Sag Control Agent) technology, which prevents paint sagging and clumping during application, resulting in smooth, flawless surfaces without the need for repeated sanding or recoating — effectively reducing waste.
- Applicable across various industries such as automotive and plastics.
2. Radiation Curing Resins (UV-Curable Resins)
- A high-growth product group that aligns with market trends by utilizing UV radiation technology to enable rapid surface curing.
- With allnex’s advanced technology, coatings can cure within seconds, compared to several minutes using conventional methods.
- The process is highly energy-efficient, eliminating the need for ovens operating at 140–250°C — a simple UV lamp exposure is enough to dry the coating instantly.
- Offers broad applications across industries such as packaging, printing inks, metal, wood, electronics, and plastics.
3. Powder Resins Made with up to 50% Recycled Rpet
- A premium-grade product line from allnex designed to meet sustainability trends.
- Outperforms competitors with a formulation that incorporates up to 50% recycled rPET without compromising product quality or stability.
- Suitable for both outdoor applications — such as automotive roof coatings and aluminum frames — and indoor uses like steel structures, shelving, and home appliances.
- Free from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that may irritate, and any excess powder can be fully reclaimed and reused, minimizing waste and maximizing efficiency.
4. Crosslinkers (XLR)
- A technology that enhances the strength and durability of coating films through chemical reactions, creating strong adhesion and long-lasting performance.
- Widely applicable across industries such as wood coatings, metal packaging, beverage cans, automotive, tire, synthetic leather, and rubber products.
5. Additives and Composites
- Additives are designed to enhance the performance and properties of coating films, improving paint flow and dispersion for smoother, more consistent finishes.
- Composite materials offer metal-like strength and durability while being significantly lighter — ideal for modern applications.
- Recognized as next-generation materials, they support innovation and development across multiple industries.
- Broadly used in automotive, construction, large-scale packaging, and shipbuilding industries.
The strength of allnex embodies GC’s vision to become a leader in Specialty Chemicals through sustainable innovation, building upon its solid foundation in core petrochemical businesses. This approach drives growth while creating meaningful value for both the environment and society. The expansion of allnex is therefore more than just business growth — it is a clear reflection of GC’s unwavering commitment to establishing a strong and resilient foundation for long-term competitiveness and sustainable success.
