GC has set the target of community satisfaction rate in 2019 and 2020 at least 86 percent. Moreover, GC aims to maintain the community satisfaction rate at 86 percent, upgrade and expand CSR projects in line with the principles of circular economy and GC’s strategy, and maintain the first ranking in corporate citizenship and philanthropy according to DJSI evaluation as the long-term target of GC.

CSR Strategy

GC has developed the Corporate Sustainability Strategy based on one of Corporate Strategy “Balance Business with Sustainability”. Our Corporate Sustainability Strategy has focused on economic, social and environmental dimensions, as well as sustainability trends, UN SDGs, and stakeholder’s expectations and concerns to guide GC to develop Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities and ensure the alignment of balancing business.

The Balance Business with Sustainability strategy comprises of three pillars, including 1) Environmental Value, 2) Economic Value and 3) Social Value to achieve set goals related to becoming environmental and sustainability leader, and building social trust.

GC intends to strengthen its business performance and contribute to the highest value to the communities and social. By following the Corporate Sustainability Strategy and G-BEST criteria, we prioritize CSR/CSV program according to three priorities, which are Better Living, Sharing, and Ecology.

Description of alignment between priority and the business drivers

GC values the development of quality of life of communities and society. The company intends to boost well-being, income and economy and develop human resources under the self-sufficiency and self-sustainability concepts. GC focuses on CSR projects that create business growth to company while improving quality of life to provide long-term value for society.

GC implements this project to develop the integrated waste management system starting from the waste collecting points to the recycling / disposal process, elevate the quality of life in Khung BangKachao and help the area to grow strongly and become a sustainable eco-friendly community. This project applied the principles of circular economy to reduce waste in the area and add value of plastic waste. This project uses innovation and technology to transform plastic waste into quality recycled polyester threads which is later processed into high quality products. This project also provides the skill related to plastic waste value creation to the local community contributing to local employment and raises awareness in waste sorting from a household level, reduces the amount of waste flowing into the oceans and resource utilization and supports circular economy in Khung BangKachao area.

Upcycling SE project

GC has implemented the Upcycling SE project based on the social enterprise model through PTT Group’s Sarn Palung Social Enterprise (SPSE). The project focuses on managing plastic waste in a sustainable way and creating added value to them with the upcycling process. The upcycling process is to recycle plastic waste and turn them into fashionable and daily life items such as clothes, bags, and furniture. These upcycled products have been sold to both corporate and retailed customers with the trademarks Upcycling by GC and Upcycling Plastic Waste. Plastic waste for upcycling production has been collected and sorted under Upcycling the Oceans, Thailand and ThinkCycle Bank projects, which have been carried out regularly by GC in collaboration with communities and schools in Rayong province.

Business Benefit KPIs

  • Generate revenue 12.35 million THB and made a profit of 3.63 million THB in 2019.

Social/Environmental Benefit KPI

  • In 2019, approximate 505,000 PET bottles have been recycled to produce upcycled products.
  • Reduce approximately 44.69 tCO2e of GHG emissions since virgin plastic production and landfill process have been replaced with the use of used PET bottles as raw materials. The amount of reduced GHG emission equals to planting 4,965 trees (to absorb generated CO2).
  • Generate income at 45,790.60 THB for community enterprises which collect and sell used plastic bottles to recycling plants.
  • Generate income for three local communities/ disadvantaged groups.

Moreover, example of other social enterprise projects supported by GC are as followed:

  • Social enterprise of the development of winter agriculture

    This project supports the process of packaging, raw product’s material, and financial system through local community association. The products are promoted through a TV program channel Thairath 32 called “@ My Way” and Facebook: The products are then distributed to local market at ENCO/RO and local factory market of 6 factories with the cooperation of the networking of Pun Sook market and Central Plaza Rayong. The annual income from this project from January to September 2019 was 224,053 THB.

  • Social enterprise of the development of Khlong Nam Hu rice milk soaked cloth

    This project has been registered for design patent from Department of intellectual property and is a copyrighted product to the community. The project has been sponsored by the company for the rice milk mixing machine, marketing communication, distribution channels and product enhancement. The annual income from this project from January to December 2019 was 676,590 THB.

  • Social enterprise of clothing products from Map Chalud community

    This project supports the production local cloth bag from Chalud community. The project has been sponsored by the company for the rice milk mixing machine, marketing communication, distribution channels and product enhancement. The annual income from this project from January to December 2019 was 562,128 THB. Overall income from social enterprise activities and local business of Rayong combined 4,971,294 THB (Jan – Dec 2019)

Ecology – Developing ecological sustainability to offset environmental impacts from operation.

Description of alignment between priority and the business drivers

GC gives high priority to operate business in ecologically sustainability manner throughout the value chain. The project implements the forest restoration and increase biodiversity in the GC’s operation area in Rayong province.

Reforestation and Biodiversity Restoration on Huai Ma Hat Mountain

GC implements the project to increase abundance of ecosystem in for watershed forest areas, support sustainable water management, and enhance biodiversity of Huai Ma Hat Mountain in Rayong Province as well as reduce the impact from climate change. Project’s activities include reforestation, construction of firebreaks and check dams and building awareness programs focusing on natural resource conservation and environmental protection in the surrounding communities.

  • Overall reforestation target of the project covers 693 rais. In 2019, we reforested 287 rais due to the occurrence of forest fires and afforest 8 more rais.
  • We target to construct 1,000 check dams to restore natural water sources in communities. In 2019, we constructed new 13 check dams and maintained 87 existing check dams.
  • From 2013 to 2019, we have constructed 409 check dams from our innovative plastic flapped sacks at the amount of 11,570 pieces.
  • Firebreaks have been constructed covering the distance 672 meters in 2019.
  • Stimulate local economy through job creation and economic value generation. In 2019, this project created income to communities of 528,330 THB .
  • According to biodiversity research,  the number of animal and plant species in the project area  were 326 and 169 species, increased from 170 and 97  species in 2015, respectively.
  • 47,923 trees have been planted since 2013, which can increase CO2 absorption in the project area.
  • 4,389 tCO2e of GHG emission reduction from 693 rais of reforestation.
